Inspiring New Dignity and Hope
As a topic that’s typically taboo in many African cultures, menstrual health is often surrounded by stigmas and young girls have to bear the brunt of insufficient access to proper sanitary wear, silence and shame, absence from school, and a lack of support. Frequently referred to as period poverty, its physical and emotional impact affects girls in poor rural communities around the globe.
More than 70% of girls in rural Zimbabwe don’t have access to proper sanitary wear and resort to old rags, leaves, and cattle dung instead – and 62% miss school days due to this lack of hygiene products.
Dedicated and named in honour of Emelina Sipumise – a Malilangwe Trust employee whose own childhood experiences led her to become an advocate for the growth and success of young women – RESCUWS (Run Dedicated to Emelina Sipumise Unifying Women in Communities Through Sustainability) empowers Zimbabwean girls by providing them with sanitary products, and motivating them through education and messages of hope.

Malilangwe Trust
Als Hüter des Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in Simbabwe ist der Malilangwe Trust für den Erhalt dieser unberührten Wildnis verantwortlich, die auf fast 530 Quadratkilometern geschütztem Land 38 verschiedene Lebensräume und ökologische Zonen umfasst.
Nach der erfolgreichen Ansiedlung von 28 Spitzmaulnashörnern und 15 Breitmaulnashörnern im Jahr 1998 ist im Reservat eine global signifikante Population beider Arten gewachsen. Das Programm war so erfolgreich, dass es als Vorbild für die Wiederansiedlung von Nashörnern in anderen Reservaten in Afrika dient.
Der Trust hat einen Plan für ein harmonisches Zusammenwirken von Naturschutzinitiativen und Dorfentwicklungsprojekten in angrenzenden Regionen entwickelt und ein Refugium für unzählige Wildtiere geschaffen, darunter Herden von seltenen Antilopenarten wie Rappen- und Pferdeantilope, die sich hier gut vermehren.
In einem Umweltbildungszentrum können Lehrer und ihre Schüler sich mit dem Leben in der Natur und der Feldarbeit auseinandersetzen. Das Ernährungsprogramm des Trusts versorgt täglich 20.000 Kinder vor der Schule mit einer stärkenden Mahlzeit, um der zunehmenden Nahrungsmittelunsicherheit in der Region entgegenzuwirken.
