Ian Mey

Assistant Head Guide, Sabi Sand

Ian was born in the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg, South Africa. Despite urban roots, his passionate affair with the veld was sparked by “Eternal Enemies”, a documentary about lion and hyena. His infatuation was blatantly encouraged by his grandparents who took him on many safaris and showered him with books about animals.

While studying for a diploma in Game Ranging and Lodge Management, he freelanced as a guide. He accepted a position at Phinda where he got to know the majestic Maputoland better, then went to the Kalahari Desert, tracking black rhino and Kalahari lions on foot and meeting lesser-known denizens like pangolins and aardvark before going to the Okavango Delta to see some of the most untouched wilderness on the planet.

He joined Singita Sabi Sand Game Reserve, waking up to incredible beauty, ever on the lookout for furred, scaled or feathered creatures, always ready with a camera.
