Stephen Wambura Chacha

Field Guide, Grumeti, Serengeti

Stephen was born in 1982 in Musoma region, Tanzania, but completed most of his schooling in Kenya. From 2003-2006 he worked as a part-time teacher at Twibhoki Primary English Medium School at Mugumu near Serengeti National Park. In July 2007 he joined Singita Grumeti Reserve, as a radio operator but he became a guide in 2012. Elephants and lions are his favourite animals.

The best sighting of his career was when he witnessed an African rock python trying to fend off three lionesses who wanted to steal the Impala that the python was busy swallowing. The snake tried in vain to defend its kill from the lions by hissing and striking out at them. After 10 minutes, however, it began to tire and the lionesses managed to pull away from the carcass and feed on it less than 10 m from the exhausted and defeated reptile.
